New Zealand Kingfisher

carving: Various kingfisher carvings

Date: various

location: Private collection

THE CARVINGS: I don’t remember many of the details about wood used for these, but the feet are fine silver and for the eyes I use onyx.

The bird

THE BIRD: A native found throughout Australasia. The NZ sub-species is distributed on all islands though not as common in Central Otago, Southland and alpine areas. An interesting fact,  their feet are syndactal –  meaning some toes are fused together.
