Fantail – Piwakawaka

THE CARVINGS: Fantails are the most popular bird I carve. Many identify with this charming wee bird. This page displays a variety of carvings since 2010. I don’t remember many of the details about wood used for these, but the feet are fine silver and for the eyes I use onyx.

The birds

THE BIRD: Endemic to New Zealand. Fantails are found on all islands though not in tussock lands and alpine areas. An interesting fact, the dark morph or black fantail is almost exclusively a South Island phenomonom, with the few found around Wellington considered blown over the Cook Straight.
