THE CARVING: Carved as part of an exhibition ‘Extinct birds of the Chatham Islands’. Carved from totara fence post, crystal eyes, fine silver talons.

The bird

THE BIRD: Extinct. Considered extinct in 1838 but a collector for Dieffenbach walked off the sailing ship and collected the only existing specimen in 1840. He likely bumped off the last living bird. This skin is kept at the Tring Museum in the UK.


Life size. Free standing. size with base – approximately 250mm high x 500mm x 300mm.
