THE CARVING: Carved while I was an artist in residence during Thyme Festival 2010, Alexandra. Carved from totara salvaged from a fence post, aslo used as its base stand. A typical pose standing on one leg.

The birds

THE BIRD: Endemic to New Zealand. The elegant black stilt are the rarest wader in the world. Only just over 100 survive in the wild Mackenzie Basin, Central South Island, where they breed.
