Black robin

THE CARVINGS: Carved as part of an exhibition ‘Extinct birds of the Chatham Islands’. Included in the exhibition as a counterpoint to the extinction of the other birds. The Black robin is a NZ success story, this species pulled back from the edge of oblivian by the narrowest margin, thanks to the last breeding female ‘Old Blue’. Photos L.A.

THE BIRD: Endemic to New Zealand. Only found on the Chatham Islands. Endangered but population is growing, thanks to the breeding program. From 5 individuals which included the only breeding pair, to more than 200 today.
